CECIL I'll bet you did, love. That must have given him a nasty surprise. Linda looks directly into her father's eyes. LINDA Yes, he went straight down on his knees. (beat) Can we go home now, Daddy? CECIL (smiling) Yes, of course we can princess. Cecil turns back toward the farm manager as he and Linda go to the door. CECIL (continuing) Tell the police we've gone back to Hampton Lodge when they get here. Cecil starts out the door and then stops. CECIL (continuing) Actually, give them a quick ring to let them know, please. FARM MANAGER Yes, sir. The farm manager's wife picks up the notes her husband had made and hands them to Cecil. YOUNG WOMAN I'll see to it that he does that right now. See you later, Linda...don't worry about the horses, well sort them out for you. Linda sticks her head back in the door and smiles at the couple. LINDA Thanks...and thanks for helping me. Linda disappears and Cecil exits, closing the door. INT. HAMPTON LODGE - AFTERNOON Linda sits at the huge antique table in the dining room. There is a blonde-haired POLICE WOMAN who is about 35 years old with a pleasant manner sitting on Linda's left. Rene is sitting on her right side. The police woman has a notepad in one hand and a pen in the other. Rene looks impatient. The police woman reaches over and puts her hand over Linda's hand, which is resting on the table. She looks at Linda sympathetically. POLICE WOMAN I think that's all for now. (beat) Don't worry, Linda, we won't have any problem catching him with all the information you've given us. The police woman picks up an artists sketch from the table and looks at it. POLICE WOMAN (continuing) Especially with this sketch of him. Most people aren't that good at doing these. You're a clever girl remembering the registration too. Now that will be really useful. The police woman stands up. POLICE WOMAN (continuing) Okay, love, you get some rest now. LINDA (stuttering slightly) Th..thank you! (beat) I...I...I'm just glad you don't think it'll be a problem getting him. Rene looks at Linda as if she's not worth bothering with. The police woman notices. Rene changes her face to look caring. RENE It's all right, my love. It wasn't your fault, these things happen. The police woman walks toward the door. She stops and glances back as if to try to catch Rene making faces at Linda again. Rene smiles and gets up from the table and walks with the police woman to the door. Rene opens it and the police woman exits. Rene stops and turns back to Linda. RENE (continuing) I told your father not to let you out on your own. That's the last time your going out unsupervised. You just can't stay out of trouble can you? LINDA But it wasn't my fault. Rene flashes an evil look at Linda. RENE Don't ever answer me back! Understood? You brought this on yourself and you will obey me! LINDA (a bit defiantly) Understood. Linda watches as her mother goes out the door. CLOSE UP OF LINDA'S UPPER BODY AND FACE LINDA (continuing; stubbornly) I'm not your prisoner!
