My son was married for five years before he and his wife got divorced.  I'm not sure how they did it, but it seems they got themselves pretty deeply in debt.  Their divorce was friendly but it would seem my son took the debt.  He went to one of those non profit places that help you get your debt paid.  Well, just about 8 years later he finally got them out of his life but his credit still sucks.  He need to find one of these credit repair services to get him back on track.
